20 Wholesome Burrito Recipes — Eat This Not That

The burrito gets a bad rap. In fast-food restaurants, these filling packs wrapped in mammoth tortillas are usually filled with fatty meat, a handful of cheese or cheese sauce, and a spoonful of creamy toppings. And while we have many lists of gut bomb burritos to avoid, the truth is that a burrito is only as good as you put it in. Healthy burrito recipes are easy to make at home and the best part is that you can control everything that is in them.

How to make a better burrito

We interviewed two members of the Eat This, Not That panel of experts to give us some tips for making the perfect healthy burrito. Chef Claudia Sidoti recommends leaving out white rice for cauliflower rice and opting for whole grain or gluten-free tortillas instead of processed white tortillas. Sidoti also suggests using leaner meats like turkey or trying Impossible or Beyond meats. Melissa Pfeister, founder of health and wellness brand Stripped with Melissa, repeats: “I use extra lean ground turkey instead of ground beef,” but cautions that removing fat will lose flavor. Pfeister suggests focusing on herbs and spices, various salsas, and crunchy vegetables such as lettuce, tomatoes, peppers, and onions. Bonus: Vegetables are full of fiber, so not only are they full of nutrients, but the fiber also helps us fill us up and keep us full longer, says Pfiester.

So remember, if you start with lean protein or high fiber beans and then add in crunchy veggies and low fat toppings, you end up with a great burrito recipe that might even help you lose weight. Brush up on your burrito rolling skills, then browse our collection of the best burrito recipes below. The burrito you make at home is so much healthier than anything you can buy nine times out of ten. Plus, many of these burritos can be prepared and frozen in advance. Just put them in the microwave for a healthy meal. (If you’re in the mood to buy a burrito, check out The Best Spot to Get a Burrito in Every State.)
