Lavender has been used for thousands of years to help with a number of hair and skin problems. Including lavender essential oil in your daily routine can not only add a relaxing, spa-like quality to your self-care habits, but it can even help solve some common hair and scalp problems that you may be struggling with.

Lavender essential oil is made through a process called distillation, which is where the beneficial oils are released from the plant and then concentrated. Its popularity is based on its usefulness in beauty treatments and the plant’s reputation for being environmentally friendly and easy on the wallet.

Discover five easy ways to incorporate lavender essential oil into your hair care routine.

Soothe your scalp

One of the most common causes of dandruff is a yeast called Malassezia, which produces fatty acids that can be irritating to certain people. Lavender essential oil has antimicrobial effects that can help kill fungi and bacteria that can cause major problems for your scalp.

If you’re struggling with dandruff or itchy scalp, mix a few drops of antimicrobial lavender essential oil with a few tablespoons of carrier oil and apply it directly to your scalp. Leave on for 10-15 minutes, then shampoo as usual. Repeat this process a few times a week to keep your scalp free of dandruff.

What is a carrier oil?

A carrier oil is an unscented base oil that is used to dilute strong essential oils and “wear” them safely to the skin. Common types of carrier oils are grapeseed oil, sweet almond oil, jojoba oil, and virgin coconut oil, although coconut oil is scented.

Promote hair growth

Are you struggling with slow hair growth or hair thinning? In laboratory studies, lavender has been shown to stimulate hair growth, resulting in longer, fuller hair. It can also rid hair follicles of bacteria that can prevent hair growth.

Applying lavender oil to stimulate hair growth is the same as treating scalp irritation. Simply mix with a carrier oil, apply for 10-15 minutes and wash. For best results, apply the mixture directly to your hair follicles.

Increase the gloss factor

Using lavender essential oil in a hair mask can add extra shine and give your strands and scalp the much-needed moisture. It’s an easy way to give your hair a nourishing and soothing boost that prevents hair breakage while adding a fantastic scent.

Mix several drops of lavender oil with a beneficial carrier oil like jojoba or coconut oil. Then apply the mixture to dry strands and scalp and let it sit for up to an hour before washing it off with a gentle shampoo. Rinsing with cold or cold water will help close the cuticle of the hair and give it an extra dose of shine.

Moisturize a particularly dry scalp

You’ve probably heard of the moisturizing and soothing properties of oatmeal by now. So how about you improve it a bit with Lavender Essential Oil? This powerful combination of a few tablespoons of oatmeal, several drops of lavender oil, and a little water can be applied directly to your dry scalp to soothe irritation and moisturize it. Massage the mixture directly onto the scalp and leave it there for an hour for the best results. Wash everything out with a mild detergent. Style normally and enjoy less irritation and itching.

Add it to your daily ritual

One of the easiest ways to incorporate the benefits of lavender essential oil into your hair care practice is to add it directly to the shampoo every time you wash your hair. Pour your usual amount of shampoo into your hand, then add a few drops of lavender oil. Mix well and apply directly to your hair and massage for a minute or two. Rinse clean and condition or style like you normally would.

Remember to never add lavender essential oil directly to your shampoo bottle. The oil separates from the rest of the shampoo and can be irritating in concentrated form.
