In its inaugural year, the Canada International Olive Oil Competition (IOOC) attracted 411 extra virgin and flavored olive oils from 20 countries. Fourteen judges from nine nations rated the oils and rated Greece with 87 medals more than any other country. These included six platinum awards for oils made by four companies. The closest came Spain at 36.
Terra Creta’s Koroneiki Grand Cru Extra Virgin Olive Oil continued its impressive performance this year by winning the Canada IOOC. received a platinum award at top prices at the Mario Solinas Quality Award, Leone D’Oro, the Zurich IOOC, ESAO in Spain and other international competitions. Emmanouil Karpadakis told Greek Liquid Gold that Terra Creta entered this new competition to “recognize our superior quality in a market where we are expanding our presence. Since we produce a large amount of high quality, authentic monovarietal Cretan extra virgin olive oil, a competition like the Canada IOOC is an excellent opportunity to convey this to both distribution networks and consumers. ”For Karpadakis, the Grand Cru EVOO from Terra Creta is more than just a product. He sees it as an ongoing project involving many people and techniques, as well as “a holistic approach to growing, extracting and communicating a philosophy” that focuses on making great extra virgin olive oil.
Besides winning Dozens of gold awards and additional silver and bronze awards for the country’s high quality virgin olive oils, Greece claimed the vast majority of the competition entries Awards for infused olive oils at all levels, including five platinum awards for flavored oils.
Another repeatedly triumphant company, Laconiko, received two Platinums for their flavored olive oils and five Golds and seven Silvers for their extra virgin and infused oils. Diamantis Pierrakos told Greek Liquid Gold that his company had entered the Canadian IOOC “in the hope that our recognition would open the Canadian market for us, given that we are based in North America,” with their olive oil Greece was imported directly from their family property. Double platinum award winner Sakellaropoulos Organic Farms “Took part in the Canada IOOC to confirm the top quality of our single estate olive oils again in an international competition,” said Nick Sakellaropoulos. “This is a further confirmation for the consumer of the excellent, unique taste and the very high quality of our olive oils, which we constantly demonstrate at the most important olive oil competitions around the world. We have have now received 355 international awards in major competitions for our olive products, which is a record number for a Greek organic producer on a single estate. ”With 12 extra virgin and flavored olive oils in the Canadian IOOC, they won a platinum, gold or silver award for each, including six gold medals.

The awards presented to hundreds of olive oils at the Canada IOOC can help introduce Canadians to many of the great oils in the world.
