A new program aims to help one of the districts most affected by diabetes.

According to the city, 13% of Brownsville residents are diagnosed with diabetes.

Gus Geter has lived with the disease for 12 years and says it was “a trip”.

Rae Gomes, director of the Brownsville Community Culinary Center, says they hope to help Geter and others on this journey.

“Brownsville has one of the highest rates of diabetes in the city,” says Gomes. “One thing that COVID has brought from the center is the need to address these public health issues.”

That’s why the Brownsville Community Culinary Center is launching its Diabetes Wellness Program.

Gomes says the goal of the program is to provide people with food and services in order to maintain healthy lifestyles, as the neighborhood has a low supply of healthy food.

“We want to make sure that people can adopt these habits beyond the program and go ahead and maintain these habits without us,” says Gomes. “Not only for their individual lifestyle, but also for their families.”

Geter hopes the program will help itself and have a positive impact on the community.
