WASHINGTON – US Senator Kevin Cramer (R-ND), along with Senators Tim Scott (R-SC) and Mark Warner (D-VA), reintroduced the PREVENT DIABETES Act, a law to improve access to the extended model of Medicare Diabetes Prevention Program (MDPP). by allowing CDC-approved virtual suppliers to participate in the program.
“Type 2 diabetes can be prevented if people have access to adequate care,” said Senator Cramer. “Our legislation makes treatment more accessible to Americans living in rural or medically underserved communities.”
The PREVENT DIABETES Act would provide access to virtual programs under the MDPP to prevent or delay the onset of diabetes. The MDPP Expanded Model uses evidence-based interventions to prevent the full onset of type 2 diabetes in Medicare benefit recipients at risk. Unfortunately, the existing extended MDPP model is only available through face-to-face sessions, making participation in the program difficult for individuals in rural or medically underserved areas.
Senators Cramer, Scott and Warner are supported by Senators Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV), Tom Cotton (R-AR), Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-MS), Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ) and Tina Smith (D -MN). The law is approved from 26 health organizations.
