(NEXSTAR) – Walmart on Tuesday unveiled the first privately-owned analog insulin offering a steep discount on the prescription drug used to treat diabetes.

The retail giant said the new insulin, called NovoLog, is only available through its private label ReliOn and will “revolutionize access and affordability of diabetes care by offering customers significant price savings without compromising quality.”

The brand includes analog insulin vials for $ 72.88 and a FlexPen for $ 85.88. Without insurance, this means savings of 58% or 75% compared to the cash price of branded insulin products. Walmart estimates this would save up to $ 101 per vial of branded insulin, or $ 251 per pack of branded FlexPens.

“We know that many people with diabetes have difficulty managing the financial burden of this condition and we are focused on helping with affordable solutions,” said Dr. Cheryl Pegus, executive vice president, Walmart Health & Wellness, in a statement, citing diabetes “affects disproportionately underserved populations”.

NovoLog, a fast-acting insulin analog, is used to control high blood sugar in adults and children with diabetes. A prescription is required to purchase and diabetic patients are cautioned to always consult their doctor regarding treatment for the condition.

Approximately 34 million Americans – nearly 10% of the US population – live with diabetes, the fastest growing chronic disease in the country.

“Diabetes often comes with high medical costs, estimated at $ 9,601 per person per year,” said Tracey D. Brown, chief executive officer of the American Diabetes Association, in a statement. “We welcome all affordable solutions that make diabetes management more accessible to the millions of Americans living with diabetes.”

The new NovoLog insulin syringe, manufactured by Novo Nordisk, will be available in Walmart pharmacies in the US this week and in Sam’s Club pharmacies from mid-July.
