AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) – The Women’s, Infant and Child Nutrition Program, known as “WIC,” helps pregnant women, new mothers, and young children learn about nutrition to stay healthy.
The program provides nutritional education and counseling, nutritious foods and access to health care assistance for low-income women, infants and children.
They also offer breastfeeding courses and counseling.
The program also refers customers to various health and social services.
Due to COVID-19, the program has seen a 20 percent decrease in the number of active participants in the program.
You have decided to launch a multimedia outreach campaign to raise awareness in the community of the important resources that the WIC program offers.
Margaret Payton, MBA, RD, the director of the Amarillo WIC, says they are seeing a small number of attendees, but they would like to keep seeing more.
“It affects the health outcomes of individuals and our community, and we want a healthy community and healthy youth. And we really want to make sure everyone is aware and getting back into the WIC routine and making their WIC appointment, ”says Payton.
The outreach campaign is not the only thing currently being done with the WIC program.
Jerry Danforth, Facility Director, says there are some new changes being made to the facility.
He says that sidewalks will be built around the parking lot, all of the asphalt will be removed and new six-inch concrete will be poured and a security fence will be put around the parking lot.
Danforth says this new project has many advantages.
“What we’re building here is something that will last the life of the building instead of having to do repairs or work on it regularly every year. It also enables her to stage farmers’ markets and various events that she would have here, as well as to control freight and parking in the parking lot during business hours, ”says Danforth.
He also believes that this will give customers a better customer experience.
The contract will be awarded next week and construction will begin shortly thereafter.
Danforth says construction should be completed by the end of September.
