SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) – The South Bend Community School Corporation has partnered with Chartwells K12 to host a “Discovery Kitchen Live” event in Potawatomi Park on Friday.

The program took place in various South Bend parks throughout the summer. The weekly event is led by Chef Kenneth Acosta and focuses on introducing children to cooking, nutrition facts and kitchen safety in a fun and engaging way.

Today’s menu featured hot dogs, vegetable skewers, and French toast with peanut butter and jelly.

“Nutrition isn’t all about educating,” said Kenneth Acosta, Executive Chef at Chartwells K12 South Bend. “But it’s also good for your health. It’s good all round. I think we get lost in the community when we have too many fast food aspects. And these are things to take home and go on an adventure at home. Bring the family together, bring the community together, and eat at the table again. And say: ‘Hey, that wasn’t that bad and not that difficult to cook either.’ “

The hosts say food insecurity among youth is increasing across the country and they want to make sure they educate children about the importance and value of quality food.
