As of August 1, 2021, 36 people in 17 states contracted salmonella, a bacterial infection that can make some people quite sick, especially those 65 and over, those under the age of 5, and the immunocompromised. This is an active investigation and officials from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are currently conducting interviews and collecting data to determine the exact source of the outbreaks. So far, they found that those who reported symptoms all ate Italian-style meats such as salami, prosciutto, and other meats found in antipasto and sausages. The exact source (s) and brand (s) are not yet known.
Sick people live in states that stretch from coast to coast including: Washington, Oregon, California, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Texas, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, New York, Maryland, and Virginia .
Until there is an official recall, people living in these states should heat all Italian-style meats to 165 degrees F or higher before eating them. Any salmonella will be killed. Keep up to date with this investigation and future recalls by subscribing to the CDC’s food safety email list.
