Monica Nyman, a registered nutritionist with the St. Louis District Dairy Council, shares the health and wellness trends of 2022 and how dairy products fit into those trends.

Focus on the health span over the life span

Before the pandemic, Americans focused on extending their lives rather than necessarily prioritizing their health. Now there is growing recognition that health is just as important as lifespan, and Americans are shifting their focus to overall immune system health. The aim is to take in enough immune-building nutrients every day to keep the immune system working at its best. With increasing evidence showing a link between gut health and general health, we are looking for foods that not only help build immune system resilience to withstand symptoms and the duration of illness, but also foods with a high level Proportion of prebiotics and probiotics.

While many are looking for a quick fix to improving their immune system and gut health, such as new services or specialized treatments, Nyman recommends sticking to the tried and tested classic – good nutrition. “A healthy eating pattern that includes foods from all food groups such as dairy, whole grains, lean protein, fruits and vegetables ensures that you are getting the nutrients you need for optimal immune health. Dairy products provide several vitamins and minerals that are known to play a role in immunity, such as vitamins A, D and B, zinc and selenium. In addition, dairy products like kefir and yogurt provide a healthy dose of live and active cultures that support gut health. “

Superfood lattes are milk-based drinks that are served warm or cold and do not contain caffeine. Instead of using caffeine, the trendy drink contains a uniquely flavored blend of herbs, spices and / or “superfood extracts” that promise a number of health benefits. 1½ cups of coarsely chopped broccoli florets

Match cut 1 cup carrots

1 stick of celery, thinly sliced

2 ½ cups of grated hot cheddar cheese

Melt 1 tablespoon butter in a pan over medium heat. Fry the onion in hot butter until translucent.

In a large saucepan, whisk together ¼ cup of melted butter and flour over medium heat. Beat and continue cooking, adding 1 to 2 tablespoons of milk.

Pour the remaining milk into the flour mixture, stirring constantly. Stir in chicken broth and bring to a simmer. Cook for about 20 minutes until the mixture thickens.

Add the broccoli, carrots, sautéed onions, and celery to the broth. Simmer for 20 minutes or until vegetables are tender.

Stir cheddar cheese into the soup until the cheese melts. Season with salt and pepper and enjoy.
