Since this is a generation farm it is really a family affair and I think there is almost blood flowing. I am a 1/6 generation dairy farmer. I farm full-time with my mother and father as well as my husband and our almost 11 month old daughter Annabelle. And she just loves animals and is not afraid of anything. She will be happy to go straight to him. She’s not afraid, 95% of Wisconsin’s dairy farms are family-owned. This happens because kids who grow up on the dairy farm learn from their parents and it instills that crazy work ethic in them until the job is done. You don’t work until 5:00 a.m., check the clock and go home at the end of the day. It’s something very unique and very different from a traditional career and I really believe it’s a lifestyle, not a career. Animal care is our top priority on the farm. We are committed to our animals and they are looked after 365 days a year around the clock. The key to this is excellent cow comfort and nutrition, and I worked as a dairy nutritionist for 3.5 years after college. So I joke with people that these cows adjusted their diet in such a way that I am jealous. I wish I had my own nutritionist for many days. I’ve always had a passion for working with dairy cattle, but I took the opportunity to actually work on the farm after college to see that the farm was really my heart. It is really fulfilling to be able to carry on the family tradition. I understand the challenges and persistence it will take for the generations before me. I hope that one day our daughter Annabelle would like to take over the farm and that we can offer her this opportunity. When I came home for the first few years, I had the opportunity to work with my grandfather. He never said it, but I know he was very happy to know that the farm would go on.
