The Endocrine Society’s annual meeting showed that people who started eating before 8:30 a.m. had lower levels of insulin resistance whether or not they restricted their food intake to less than 10 hours a day. In the uninitiated, insulin resistance occurs when the body does not respond as well to insulin, leading to a higher risk of type 2 diabetes.

Approximately 10,575 adults participated in the study and were divided into three groups based on the total amount of time they had eaten. The researchers analyzed whether the duration of eating and the time of ingestion were related to the fasting blood sugar level and the estimated insulin resistance.

Although fasting sugar levels didn’t differ significantly, a report on the Endocrine Society’s official website found that insulin resistance was lower in all groups when they had their first meal before 8:30 a.m.

“These results suggest that timing is more closely related to metabolic actions than duration and supports early eating strategies,” said Lead Researcher Marriam Ali, MD, of Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois.
