Episode Notes

This week, host Rumaan Alam is talking to cookbook author Julia Turshen about her career as a professional home cook and her new book Simply Julia: 110 Simple Recipes for Healthy, Comfortable Eating. In an interview, Julia explains why she was attracted to cookbooks at a young age and how she later managed to combine her love for writing and her love for cooking in one career. She also talks about the deeply personal details in Simply Julia and why she tries to get readers into and out of the kitchen “as simply and efficiently as possible”.

After the interview, Rumaan and co-host June Thomas deal with Julia’s advice to “only write the book that only you can write”.

In the exclusive Slate Plus segment, Julia Rumaan helps out of his cooking slide.
