Crunch Fitness, a new gym that plans to open in March, touts a no-judgment policy and membership features it believes stand out.

“Crunch really offers things that other gyms don’t have,” assistant general manager Angi Sipe said. “The fitness center is composed of the gym, tanning, group fitness and personal training.”

Sipe and general manager Teresa Brandenburg both expressed excitement for bringing a new gym to Columbia in what they consider a “prime location” across from the University of Missouri campus.

The gym is taking over the old Office Depot space at 101 S. Providence Road with a $5 million renovation of the 40,000-square-foot facility.

Special features

Having 30 different workout classes as part of memberships at no additional cost is a special feature Crunch Fitness offers, Sipe said.

“There’s a spot for everyone, no matter what level of fitness someone is at,” said Kayla Poole, general manager of Crunch’s Lawrence, Kansas, location, while helping with a presale event at the Columbia location Thursday morning.

All personal trainers employed by Crunch are certified through the National Society of Sports Medicine or American Council on Exercise, providing confidence to members that the trainers are knowledgeable and qualified for their role, Sipe said.

The fitness center will have a full service tanning salon with beds and spray tan services. After a workout, individuals with a qualifying membership can utilize the sauna and HydroMassage.

The Kid’s Crunch program, another feature Sipe says sets the gym apart, helps parents of children 6 months to 12 years old by providing child care for up to two hours.

Thursday’s presale event included offers for the first 500 customers who sign up as members to only pay the $1 enrollment fee with the first month of membership free. Even with the winter storm, Sipe said in the first few hours, over 20 people had come to their presale event and signed up for a membership.

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, the gym staff said they plan to follow whatever state and local guidelines are in place and maintain a strict cleaning regimen.

Crunch Fitness membership options

There are three membership levels that individuals can choose from.

The base membership is $9.99 per month and includes cardio, weights, machines, locker rooms with showers, an online nutrition program, power half-hour circuit training, free Wi-Fi and the sauna.

The peak membership is $22.99 per month and includes everything from the base membership as well as group fitness classes, live online workouts, HyrdoMassage and tanning beds.

The peak results membership is $29.99 and includes everything from the peak membership as well as spray tanning, guest privileges, advanced high-intensity interval training classes, ride classes and child care.

Personal training can be added to any membership for an additional cost.

The facility will be open 24 hours per day Monday through Friday and 7 am to 9 pm over the weekend, with the plan to eventually move to 24/7.

The fitness company, headquartered in New York City, operates over 360 gyms worldwide and across 30 states.
