So many people have type 2 diabetes today. More than one in ten have diabetes. About one in three people suffers from prediabetes. Between 2005 and 2016, the percentage of adults with prediabetes who were aware of their condition doubled. This is a critical situation and needs to be addressed. The American Diabetes Association guidelines don’t work. Those who accept this disease and change their lifestyle can recover by reversing the disease. I’ll talk about how more than just sugar and carbohydrates play a role in this process.
Cholesterol plays an important role in this. Most people with diabetes are treated for high cholesterol. Statin drugs are usually prescribed and have their own debilitating side effects. Inflammation also plays a role in the occurrence of diabetes.
The unhealthy triad of high cholesterol, inflammation and diabetes is a battle that is lost if the patient and their doctor do not address all three together. I recently heard a great analogy about how inflammation and diabetes are related, and how lowering cholesterol is actually harmful in diabetics. When we eat inflammatory foods, inflammation in the body and cholesterol increase. Think of ignition and flammable foods as fire. Now imagine the cholesterol as the firefighter. Cholesterol is increased to reduce inflammation. The firefighter has to put out the fire. Why should you stop the firefighter from putting out the fire? Why not stop the cause of the fire right away?
By taking cholesterol lowering drugs, you are preventing the firefighter from doing his job. The reason the fire needs to be put out is because the inflammation increases to unhealthy levels in order for the body to function properly. This is an unhealthy loop that needs to be stopped. Ingesting inflammatory foods only hampers the healthy functioning of so many organs in the body. In diabetes, the pancreas (and other organs) cannot function properly.
By just cutting your sugar and carbohydrates, you are only reducing the fire a little, but not extinguishing it. The inflammation needs to be reduced and stopped. It does this by choosing non-flammable foods and eliminating harmful chemicals and food additives. Inflammatory foods include dairy products, grains, artificial and natural flavors, food colors, unhealthy oils, and more.
It helps to get back to basics with homemade foods and non-genetically modified organic (GMO) foods. Animals fed GMO grains affect the processing of this meat. We eat what the animal has eaten. When fed an inflammatory grain diet, we are eating an inflammatory grain diet by consuming the meat of this animal. The cultivation methods are no longer the same as they were years ago. We have to be careful what we eat now. Not only with organic fruit and vegetables, but also with our meat. As a side note, grass-fed beef is not considered a non-flammable food.
It has to be grass fed, grass ready or 100% grass fed. Otherwise, the animal was fed a GMO grain in addition to the grass.
My patients who lead anti-inflammatory lifestyles find that their blood sugar levels are more stable. Most are even able to reverse their diabetes with lifestyle and dietary changes. These are just a few of the diet changes that will help control or eradicate diabetes. It’s not that difficult to make the changes necessary to stop the cycle once you know which foods will reduce inflammation or prevent the fire from starting in the first place.
