BARRIE, ONT. – There was a roadside car ride in Barrie on Saturday to raise funds to raise funds for Diabetes Canada.

It’s part of a national initiative by the National Diabetes Trust, Diabetes Canada’s social enterprise. The project was launched for the first time last year to make donating as easy as possible during the pandemic.

“Our mission is to work with Canadians from coast to coast to collect their carefully used household clothes and small household items,” Sean Shannon, president and CEO of the National Diabetes Trust, told CTV News. “We collect it, we monetize it, and the net proceeds will go to the good work Diabetes Canada does in all research and programs to help 1 in 3 Canadians with all forms of diabetes.”

The Barrie event is one of 100 events taking place across the country today and next month. The organization wants to collect used clothing and bed linen with care.

“We think about it, if it’s something you think someone else can use because it’s in reasonable condition, then we can collect it and we can monetize it,” says Shannon.

The team in Barrie was at the Giant Tiger location at 201 Cundles Road East from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Diabetes Canada also has community trash cans and household pickups for those who can’t make it today.

While all donations are welcome, Shannon says those who donate to trash cans must always make sure items aren’t on the floor.

“If it fits in the bin, it’s good; if it doesn’t fit in the bin, it’s not good, ”says Shannon. “If the bin is full, please do not leave it outside. Find another trash can or keep it for another day, because even when the weather is nice it spoils very quickly outside with rain and mold and mold and so on. “
