The Ministry of Social Justice has decided to provide food sets for the elderly as part of a nutritional support program.

Vayoposhanam is being piloted as part of the 2019-20 Action Plan of the centrally funded National Seniors Action Plan, which has allocated £ 1 billion for the comprehensive development of older people. The action plan provides £ 42 lakh for the nutritional support program.

Because a lack of a balanced diet and good nutrition cause problems such as loss of muscle mass, bone density and other ailments in the elderly, the food kits are aimed at increasing immunity, especially that of financially backward elderly people who live alone or none have take care of them. It was decided to provide a food kit to the eligible elderly for two months in order to maintain their health.

The State Nutrition Board has provided a list of nutrient-dense foods to include in the kit. These items, such as rice, ragi, black gram, soy pieces, ground nuts, almonds, sesame balls, ghee and coconut oil are provided by Supplyco and distributed through the department’s district offices.

Recipes too

Not only are the food kits provided. Recipes are also given that can be made using the foods included in the kit. A food kit for a beneficiary for two months costs £ 1,639.

The program is piloted in the Sayamprabha Home, which is run in 12 districts with financial support from the department. Almost 2,500 elderly people who have registered with Sayamprabha Home will receive the kit after choosing the beneficiary.

The selection is made by the home monitoring committees. To be eligible, older people should belong to the lower poverty line (BPL) category. Single persons will receive priority in the distribution of the kits.
