DSM to grow to be a Well being, Vitamin & Bioscience firm

Royal DSM, a global science-based company, has made a strategic decision to fully focus its resources and capabilities on pressing societal and environmental challenges related to the way the world produces and consumes food. As a result, “DSM is simplifying its operational structure and organizing its health, nutrition and life sciences activities into three business areas, each of which offers clear opportunities to advance human and planetary health and underpin DSM’s growth plans,” he says Company in a press release. At the same time, DSM confirms that it has begun a review of strategic options for its materials businesses, including a possible change of ownership.

As the world population grows, the world faces several systemic and interrelated food system challenges that affect the health and wellbeing of people, animals and the planet. Advances in digital technology and life sciences offer realistic scalable solutions to address these challenges and create new markets and innovation opportunities. With its strong combination of scientific competencies and a growing portfolio of nutritional and health solutions, DSM is ideally positioned to take advantage of these opportunities.

Geraldine Matchett and Dimitri de Vreeze are the Co-CEOs of DSM. They commented, “Our planet is rapidly approaching critical and irreversible ecological tipping points, as warned in the latest IPCC report. Climate change is already posing major challenges to food systems around the world, while food production remains one of the largest emitters of greenhouse gases. As the global leader in the science behind better health and nutrition, we have the ability, the ability, and therefore the responsibility, to use our resources and expertise where they can be most effective. By focusing exclusively on our health, nutrition and life sciences activities, we will be able to act more flexibly and effectively and meet the growing need for better and more sustainable nutrition. “

DSM will become a fully focused health, nutrition and life sciences company

At the center of the transformation of DSM is the creation of three market-oriented business groups. Each business group will be much more closely aligned with their respective customers and, through the integration of the activities currently being carried out by the DSM Innovation Center, will be fully equipped to rapidly develop effective science-based market-ready innovations. The new business groups will be:

  • A Food & drinks Business group that bundles the food, beverage and pet food activities of the current business units DSM Food Specialties and DSM Nutritional Products. This business group with sales of more than 1 billion. The business group’s portfolio includes innovations such as EverSweet ™, a natural, calorie-free sweetener, and CanolaPRO®, a plant-based alternative protein. It will also host the milk-based flavors of First Choice Ingredients, subject to regulatory approval for this recently announced acquisition.
  • A Health, Nutrition & Care Business group with sales of around € 2.5 billion with the aim of keeping the growing world population healthy through nutrition and care. This business group provides sustainable, science-based and innovative solutions for consumers in the early life nutrition, nutritional supplements, pharmaceuticals, medical nutrition, personal care, fragrances, biomedical materials and nutritional enhancement sectors for the most vulnerable communities. It includes ampli-D®, the fast-acting and potent form of vitamin D, an extensive algae lipid portfolio, personalized nutrition initiatives such as Hologram Sciences and Glycom, the world’s leading provider of HMO prebiotics.
  • A Animal nutrition & health Business group with an existing turnover of more than 3 billion euros, which will focus on special solutions for a radical but achievable transformation of the sustainability of animal protein production. With essential products such as vitamins and carotenoids, the recently acquired Erber Group, one of the world’s largest suppliers of eubiotics and market leader in mycotoxin risk management, as well as a wide range of effective innovations such as the methane inhibitor Bovaer® and the fish oil algae alternative Veramaris. This business group also includes precision initiatives with data-driven decision-making tools for farmers like Sustell ™ and for veterinarians and veterinarians like Verax.

DSM is exploring options for its materials business

DSM has two materials businesses that, in the context mentioned above, are unlikely to be able to realize their full potential to drive the important industrial shift towards a bio-based and circular economy. The Materials Business Group will therefore be managed largely independently in the future and the global support functions will be realigned accordingly. DSM is reviewing strategic options for both Materials businesses, including a possible change of ownership.

As a health, nutrition and life science company, DSM has ambitious goals for people, planet and profit. The company recently announced an acceleration of its greenhouse gas emission reduction goal. DSM is now aiming to reduce emissions from its own operations by 50% by 2030, a significant increase over the original target of 30% and based on strong advances in recent years.
