People with diabetes are at a significantly higher risk of dying from Covid-19.
The plea follows the Diabetes Week, which ran from June 14th to 20th this year.
People with diabetes – including those across Nottinghamshire – are at significantly higher risk of dying from Covid-19, according to local NHS statistics, with more than a quarter of deaths in the East Midlands being related to the disease.
The risk tends to be higher in people with high blood sugar levels and in people who are overweight.
Being overweight can increase the risk of infections and make it difficult for the body to fight them.
Most people with diabetes are in priority group six and this group is invited to get vaccinated.
By invitation, you can book in one of the vaccination centers, pharmacies or general practices in the region. People can book an appointment online to get their vaccine or call 119 for free, anytime between 7am and 11pm, seven days a week.
Professor Azhar Farooqi, Co-Clinical Director of the Midlands Cardiovascular Disease and Respiratory Network, said, “I would like to encourage anyone with diabetes to get the coronavirus vaccine and take the vaccine that is offered to you.
“That’s because people with diabetes are prone to developing serious illness when they contract the coronavirus, and vaccines are the most effective way to prevent it.
“Vaccines are safe, effective, and it’s never too late to get a vaccination. So if you are entitled, do not hesitate to book your appointment. “
A dedicated helpline – 0345 123 2399 – is available to advise those who need help with insulin.
The helpline is part of a package of measures for people with diabetes or those at risk, including the world’s leading diabetes prevention program that has successfully helped almost 90,000 people at risk for type 2, a total weight of more than 407,967 pounds.
NHS England and NHS Improvement also produced a special video to help people with diabetes take care of their feet. The video is available at https://youtu.be/sX9Faxnvuhg
