E.WONDER WHERE your finely sculpted calves come from? According to the major INSTORE survey in 2021, jewelers really go every step of the way: Around one in three people covers an average of 5 miles or more per day when doing the rounds of their shop. However, there were less active jewelers. Sixteen percent of the respondents in our survey cover a little more than a mile a day.
Our data was based on jewelers wearing trackers such as a Fitbit or Apple Watch and a typical person stride of 2.1 to 2.5 feet. That means it takes over 2,000 steps to walk a mile, and 10,000 steps would be almost 8 miles.
While the optimal number of steps to take in a day is discussed – recent studies suggest that gains are around 8,000 steps – the basic rule that remains is that physical activity has great health benefits. That suggests that almost half of our jewelers should try to exercise a little more during the day, provided they don’t exercise outside of work.
