Publisher’s Note: The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) points out some potential risks associated with using essential oils around pets. Before buying an oil diffuser, make sure that it is safe for your pets and that you protect the room in which you plan to use it from pets.

From the rise in Covid-19 cases to the drop in temperature, you may be feeling more stressed lately – and you are likely spending more time indoors than usual. To get along better and calm myself down, I rely on an essential oil diffuser – it might come in handy for you too. This is how I found my love for essential oil diffusers: While watching my sister work on her last school project, sipping coffee, and listening to a soothing playlist, I spotted an oil diffuser next to her. Somehow, despite the stress of the moment, she seemed completely relaxed: at the time, that included the start of Covid-19 and the college newspaper she was working on.

I asked her what smells like Christmas to me. She explained it came from the BellaMist essential oil diffuser, a tiny device that breaks down essential oils and disperses them into the air. Aside from the model I loved, there are a variety of options for oil diffusers at retailers like Macy’s. Walmart and Wayfair. After doing research and learning how diffusers work and what fragrances I could get, I started borrowing my sister’s diffuser all day. Within a month it had become an integral part of my routine.

How I use the essential oil diffuser all day

The BellaMist diffuser is very easy to set up:

  1. I take off the spherical cap and fill the body with water.
  2. Then I add a few drops of oil to the water.
  3. After putting on the cap and switching on the diffuser, steam is quickly generated and distributed.

The cover protects the heated water from bubbling – and prevents me from accidentally touching the hot water. It also doubles as a light function with a variety of colors to choose from. In one of the options, the diffuser will automatically rotate through its possible colors, adding a level of aesthetically pleasing entertainment to my relaxation.

The BellaMist essential oil diffuser is compact and easy to use. It produces mist for up to four hours and comes with a 5ml bottle of peppermint essential oil to get you started. It also includes a light function that offers seven different colors.

Which oil you end up using is up to you and your routines. BellaMist offers a variety of essential oils and fragrance oils, both individually and in sets.

  • In the morning and while I work, I like to use something that can wake me up and keep me alert. For this purpose I rely on Peppermint oils.
  • As soon as I’m tired of the peppermint or enough time has passed, I’ll switch to a fiery one Clove and spice scent – It gives me the feeling of entering a new environment.
  • Later in the day or on the weekend I love the smell of lavender to help me relax and unwind.

While I prefer the aromatherapy aspect of essential oils, registered nutritionist Maya Feller TODAY said they are generally used in three ways: They can be ingested through droppers or capsules, applied topically to the skin via hair or skin care products, and into the air be distributed for aromatherapy with a diffuser. Feller uses essential oils, fragrances such as oregano, lemon, peppermint, lavender and argan oil in her practice.

Whichever route you take, be aware that the ASPCA is identifying some potential risks from using essential oils around pets. “Using an oil diffuser for a short period of time in a secured area – which your dog or cat cannot access – is likely not a problem,” they summarize. “However, if your pet has had a history of breathing problems, it may be best to avoid using such a problem altogether.” Before buying an oil diffuser, make sure that it is safe for your pets and that you protect the room in which you plan to use it from pets.
