Kim Parkinson’s inspiring story supports research showing that people with type 2 diabetes can improve their control of the condition by changing healthy lifestyles and losing weight.

Kim visits Kathryn Cooke’s Slimming World group in Roberttown on a Wednesday night after joining in October 2019.

She said, “I was told I was classified as pre-diabetic and the doctor told me that I was only a short time away from being a type 2 diabetic.

“My weight was seriously affecting my health, I had to control my weight to deal with the disease.

“Obesity has affected so many aspects of my life, from finding clothes I like to being unable to do simple, everyday tasks without being out of breath.

“I always had the feeling that I lacked the energy and that I was on a slippery slope to gain more and more weight – I saw no real way out.

“The reception I received from other members and my advisor in my local chapter was incredible.

“We share recipes and ideas for taking action, and it is useful to receive tips from other members who have also been diagnosed with prediabetes or who have type 1 or type 2 diabetes.

“While this year has undoubtedly been tough for everyone, the motivation I get from the group has helped me stay on track with my weight loss journey and I feel like I can now take on the world .

“As a group, we are closer than ever before.”

With the group’s support, Kim followed Slimming World’s nutritional plan to optimize diet, trading takeaways and processed foods for meals for the whole family.

She said, “Thanks to the changes I made, my health has improved dramatically and my blood sugar has dropped from 45 to 37 and I am no longer a diabetic.

“I’ve got my life back and I couldn’t be happier!”

Kathryn, who leads the Roberttown Slimming World group, said, “Taking care of ourselves and our health is more important than ever right now, and the changes Kim has told us about are incredible.

“I hope your success will inspire other people in the area who want to lose weight, improve their health, and develop new lifestyles to get active.”
