You have probably heard of them by now. Essential oils are very popular for their use in everything from stress relief to cleansing. But keep a few things in mind.

NS. PETERSBURG, Florida – It’s been a stressful year and a half. As we look for ways to take care of ourselves holistically, in our Whole Living series, we’re talking about essential oils.

You have probably heard of them because they have become hugely popular in recent years. But there are some things that you should know about them before you buy them.

You can see some benefits of some of the popular ones on our Instagram page.

We went to Bodhi Basics in St. Pete to speak to owner Kim Vorperian about essential oils.

They are the volatile liquid of the plant. During the distillation process, it turns the plant into water and oil, and it is the oil part. These essential parts of the plant create fragrances and aromatherapy, and also have medicinal properties.

There are many benefits, it just depends on the plant.

People come to Bodhi Basics to get them for everything from stress relievers to detergents for use in diffusers.

But there are a few things to consider.

“Since this is such a concentrated compound from the plant, you really have to pay attention to its safety. There is one thing that you should definitely dilute before you can apply it to the skin,” said Vorperian. “You don’t want direct skin contact.”

She says it’s best to do your own research and know how to use them properly.

Vorperian also wanted to mention not to eat essential oils. This is going around right now and she says it’s very dangerous, even fatal. So don’t eat.

She says that one should also pay attention to the quality of the oil, how it is produced and whether it corresponds to the ecological conscience.
