Replacing a tablespoon of rice or wheat flour in daily meals with green jackfruit flour is significantly effective in lowering plasma glucose levels in people with type 2 diabetes, according to a new study.
The study, published in the prestigious Nature Journal, found that the average decrease in glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) at week 12 was significantly higher in patients supplemented with jackfruit flour, while those given placebo flour had a slight increase in HbA1c at week 12 reported (p = 0.006).
The study was conducted by A. Gopal Rao, K. Sunil Naik, AG Unnikrishnan and James Joseph, who evaluated the effectiveness of Jackfruit365 green jackfruit flour, a patented product made from 100 percent ripe green unripe jackfruit from India, as an integral part of the daily meal in patients with type 2 diabetes.
A total of 40 patients were enrolled and a significantly higher reduction in HbA1c was observed in those in Group A who received green jackfruit meal compared to Group B from baseline through week 12.
“The mean change in FPG (fasting plasma glucose) and PPG (postprandial plasma glucose) was significantly higher in group A than in group B (p = 0.043 and p = 0.001). Continuous glucose monitoring showed a decrease in average blood sugar in 7 days after administration of jackfruit meal, ”it said.
“Patients in Group A had significantly greater reductions in HbA1c, FPG and PPG than Group B, demonstrating the effectiveness of jackfruit flour in controlling blood sugar as a medical nutritional therapy that replaces an equal amount of rice or wheat flour in the daily meal.”
This was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study conducted between May 2019 and February 2020.
Patients of both sexes aged 18 to 60 years with a diagnosis of T2DM for one year who received oral antihyperglycemic agents were randomized (1: 1) to receive either jackfruit meal 30 g / day (group A) or placebo meal (group B) ( Breakfast and dinner) replace an equal amount of rice or wheat flour daily for 12 weeks.
According to Unnikrishnan, the result of the randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study with continuous glucose monitoring underscores the benefits of green jackfruit meal for medical nutritional therapy in diabetes.
“This is a scientific advance in diabetes from India to India and these results could stimulate further research on traditional Indian diets.
I hope that the results of this research will lead to better use of nutritional medical therapy in the treatment of type 2 diabetes in India, ”said Unnikirshinan, endocrinologist and CEO of the Chellaram Diabetes Institute in Pune.
Gopal Rao pointed to a highlight of the study that was the simple intervention of green jackfruit meal and placebo in a home setting in India.
“The intervention was culturally sensitive and integrated into traditional home-made dishes such as roti and idli. This helped achieve high levels of intervention compliance for a full three month HbA1c cycle, ”said Rao, Assistant Professor, General Medicine, Govt Medical College, Srikakulam, Andhra Pradesh.
Joseph, co-author and owner of startup Jackfruit365, said Medical Nutritional Therapy (MNT) is the first option for diabetes care under ADA guidelines.
This study has proven that it is possible to practice MNT in India for a long period of time with Jackfruit365 green jackfruit flour.
Banshi Saboo, President of the Research Society for Diabetes Studies in India, welcomed the study, saying it was a wonderful example of how the scientific community and start-up entrepreneurs can work together to produce results that are relevant to clinical care.
“I have watched the journey of Green Jackfruit Flour at various stages of research, both at presentations at scientific conferences such as Diabetes India and internationally. And now the publication of this study in a prestigious international journal highlights that the scientific
Community is keen to accept evidence on traditional Indian foods and medicines when tested with a rigorous study design based on the principles of evidence-based medicine, “Saboo said.
Joseph told PTI that a meeting with former President APJ Abdul Kalam in November 2014 led to the development of the patented green jackfruit flour, which reduces rice and wheat in every traditional meal made from dough or flour in India and reduces blood sugar Addition control can only control one tablespoon per meal without changing eating habits or reducing the amount of food.
“The product became popular in India after my two-minute interaction with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Start-Up India Conference Prarambh in January this year. Currently, Jackfruit365 is the number 1 best seller in the flour category on Amazon, overtaking wheat flour, ”he claimed.
