JACKSON, miss. (WJTV) – The Greater Jackson Arts Council (GJAC) announces that Jackson has been selected as one of only ten national locations for a Limited Edition Signature Series Keith Haring Fitness Court.
A Jackson City park will be located at the intersection of State Street and Woodrow Wilson
Rickey Thigpen, CEO of Visit Jackson, says this is great for tourism as many people are expected to visit this park. He adds that the park will be in a great location too. Surrounded by hotels, restaurants, schools, hospitals, etc.
What makes the park unique is that the National Fitness Campaign worked with the Keith Haring Foundation to bring art and fitness across America together.
Kevin Haring was an artist whose pop art and graffiti-like work grew on the streets of New York City in the 1980s. His images “have become a widely recognized visual language.” The design of the fitness area will sacrifice its artwork.
The mayor of Jackson, Chokwe Antar Lumumba, is also happy about the court. He says, “This is an example of Jackson’s growing reputation as a radical city doing incredible things.”
