CAMDEN – It is essentially a festival for the fit and those who want to push themselves physically and mentally. And once again the event delivered that experience in spades.
The Megunticook Race Festival, which returned after a year out of a pandemic, offered something of everything for hardcore and weekend athletes as well as events for young and old.
On Saturday morning, September 4, the event in Barrett’s Cove on Megunticook Lake featured sprint and Olympic distance triathlons, 5-mile road races and, new this year, youth swim / run duathlons.
The Megunticook Race Festival, a win to the Penobscot Bay YMCA and Rockland-based nonprofit charity One Community Many Voices, builds on the history of the original Tinman and Maine Sports Triathlon, one of the oldest races in the United States
It was the 41st year of the triathlon.
In the Olympic triathlon, which had individual and relay components, Bill Boben, 58, was first in 2:26:45, while Kimberly Martin, 47, was the first female finisher in 3:14:03, as she was 12th overall 14 participants.
In the team part of the Olympic triathlon, the Emery / Citriglia group took first place out of five teams with 2: 20: 52.9.
In the sprint triathlon, Liam Magerr, 26, took first place in 1:09:52, while Lianne McCluskey, 29, took fourth place among the 46 participants in 1:18:33 as the first female finisher.
In the 5 km, Cooper Russell (21) finished first at 8:03 p.m., while Jenna VanRyn (15) was the first female finisher to cross the distance in second among the 21 participants at 8:46 p.m.

The Olympic triathlon course included a 0.75 mile swim, 23.5 mile bike ride, and 10.6 mile run.
The sprint triathlon course, for individuals only, included 750 meters of swimming, 12 miles of cycling, and 5.2 miles of running.
The 3-mile run / walk route was approximately 3.2 miles.
Event Director Audrey Lovering of One Community Many Voices said the distances are roughly based on Map My Run.

After failing to hold the event in 2020 due to the pandemic, Lovering said the goals for this year’s event were to have a maximum of 200 participants in the triathlons, over 50 runners / walkers for the 5km and 40 teenagers in youth swimming. Run duathlon.
Although these numbers were not met, many people attended to compete with themselves and others and get the event back on its feet on its way into the future.
The proceeds will support Penobscot Bay’s YMCA, which provides quality services that meet youth development, healthy living, and the social needs of individuals and families in the community, Lovering said.
OCMV is a charity founded by Reade and Martha Brower of Camden. It provides proactive solutions to temporary barriers for midcoast mainers living from paycheck to paycheck, Lovering said. In return, the recipients pay it on through voluntary work of their own choosing.
