LOCKPORT, NY – Lockport Police officers will have the chance to demonstrate their physical fitness this fall when the Joint Council gives the go-ahead for a two-day training exercise at Outwater Park on October 16-17.

The training is carried out by Lt. Marshall Belling and includes a day for the physical test of 20 to 30 candidates who can be hired by the law enforcement agency. Belling said this was a regular physical fitness assessment.

However, day two is something new.

“I’ve wanted to do this for a while,” said Belling. “I just got the blessing to take a physical test for current cops.”

While there is nothing to lose for officers running the 1 1/2 miles and other physical challenges, those who pass receive a reward or “perk,” Belling said, perhaps in the form of an extra day off.

Belling noted that when hiring, there are no aptitude standards requirements for officers that they must maintain in order to keep their jobs. He hopes sessions like this will promote a healthy environment for LPD.

“We think staying in shape is a good incentive,” he said.

The resolution will appear on the podium of the Joint Council at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
