RAPID CITY, SD (KEVN) – Some school districts in South Dakota are experiencing food shortages for student lunches due to supply chain issues.

Rapid City Areas Schools state that they are not currently affected by this deficiency.

“However, as we see this supply problem affecting counties across the country, we expect that at some point this could also be something we are facing,” said Katy Urban, Community Relations Manager.

Instead, the district is currently focusing on another shortage: workers serving the food.

Currently, the student nutrition department lacks 15 employees and 5 employees who are currently ill.

“So it’s a difficult situation. We want all of our children to feed every meal for breakfast and lunch, but that has been difficult and we have to be really creative to make sure we bring out those meals. “For kids,” said Urban.

Urban said that after just 10 days of the school year making sure schools were fully occupied has been a challenge and it has become an all-hand-on-deck situation.

“Usually we look at a building that is full and, if possible, try to move someone out of that building and into a building with fewer staff. We really move from wherever we can, ”said Urban.

Urban said this is a critical position to be filled as food in the stomach makes students focus and study better, and some students really rely on school lunch as their only meal of the day.

“That’s why we’re really looking for anyone who is interested in school nutrition,” says Urban.
