Two Whitsundays nurses will go to great lengths to find a cure for type 1 diabetes and will go on a week-long outback hike to raise research funds.

Proserpine Hospital nurses Troy Wake and Siobhan Barlow asked to ride the Northern Territory’s Larapinta Trail as part of a fundraiser run by the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation in August.

From August 23-29, they will travel 14 to 16 km a day to show their support for the many Australians living with type 1 diabetes.

Their mission is to raise awareness of the life-threatening condition and clear up some of the myths surrounding it, such as that it is caused by too much sugar and being overweight.

Type 1 diabetes affects 120,000 Australians and 2,742 people are diagnosed in Australia each year.

It can affect anyone, at any age, and is a lifelong disease.

“We support both people in our community who live with the relentless daily burden of type 1 diabetes,” said Ms. Barlow.

“We want to raise as much money as possible to find a cure and fund new technologies so that people can more easily manage this condition.”

Ms. Barlow and Ms. Wake are well on their way to reaching their $ 7,000 fundraising goal through an online donation page.

To make sure they get there, they are hosting a drink and nibbles event with amazing auction items at Northerlies Beach Bar & Grill on Friday June 11th.
