The online edition of the New York Times has published an editorial on Chinese tennis star Peng Shuai. Peng has reportedly not been seen in public since filing sexual assault allegations against former Vice Prime Minister Zhang Gaoli.
The editorial questions China’s suitability to host the Beijing Winter Olympics. It is titled “Where is Peng Shuai?
The editorial goes on to say that “the straightforwardness of their plight inevitably raises fundamental questions about China’s ability to host a global sporting event that purports to follow an Olympic ideal of creating a better world through sport.”
From the professional tennis world, the United Nations, the USA and other countries, more and more calls for an investigation were loud.
Videos allegedly showing Peng have been uploaded to social media accounts of people working for one of China’s state-sponsored media companies in an attempt to defuse criticism.
