Officials at the Council for Agricultural and Rural Development met on Wednesday with German NGO officials to discuss the ongoing nutrition projects in two provinces.
The project known as the Multisectoral Food and Nutrition Security Project (MUSEFO) focuses on fighting against malnutrition.
It is a grant from the German Government through the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), which has signed an implementation agreement with the Cambodian government.
The project has been carried out to fight against malnutrition and to improve the food security and nutrition situation of the poor and vulnerable people, especially children and women of reproductive age living in 180 targeted villages in Kampot and Kampong Thom provinces.
Sok Silo, deputy secretary-general of CARD, said that the MUSEFO project has assisted the Council in implementing action plans to improve food security in the country.
“In Kampong Thom province, this project has improved food availability and access to nutritious food by increasing diversified agricultural production and improving nutrition services for pregnant women and children under 2 years of age,” he said.
“It also improves the National Nutrition Program and supports Kampot and Kampong Thom Provincial Health Centers in setting up a nutrition counseling mechanism,” he said.
Sanne Sigh, an advisor to the GIZ MUSEFO, said the project has supported the government through policies, guidelines and standards nationwide. The MUSEFO primarily targeted 90 villages in Kampot province and another 90 in Kampong Thom province.
“Our primary focus is to fight malnutrition problems by focusing on improving the dietary diversity of women of reproductive age, and pregnant and lactating women,” she said.
She added it also improves the minimum acceptable diet of six to 23-month old children and exclusive breastfeeding of 0-6-month-old kids.
“That is the main outcome of the project, then we, in addition, have more nutrition-sensitive activities as well,” she said, adding that it has been implemented from March 2015 to March 2026.
Chhun Ngech Lang from Kampot province, the mother of a five-month-old baby, said that breastfeeding is very important despite being busy at work.
“I am breastfeeding my five-month-old son. Even I go to work, I still can breastfeed my child,” she said, noting that the project helped her not to use formula milk for her child.
