Construction of a nearly 22,000-square-foot Planet Gym in Statesboro is well underway and is expected to open in April or May.

“We have been actively seeking a way to bring (a Planet Fitness) to Statesboro for some time,” said Scott Breault, vice president of marketing for Planet Fitness, in an email. “Despite the difficulties caused by the pandemic, we are expanding this spacious new club and we look forward to finally serving the community once it opens.”

Planet Fitness is one of the largest fitness center operators in the United States, and the Statesboro site will be owned by the Planet Fitness Southeast franchise group, Breault said.

“PF Southeast is one of the largest Planet Fitness franchises in the country with more than 100 locations in Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama, and Florida.”

The Statesboro Planet Fitness is being built in the Southern Square Shopping Center at the western end of the former Kmart store. When finished, it will have 21,930 square feet of indoor space and offer a variety of fitness, health and wellness options.

“Our Statesboro location offers members tons of weight-training and cardio machines, TV series to keep members entertained while they workout, and a 30-minute circuit training station, black card member spa with massage chairs. Hydromassage beds, light therapy to improve the whole body, tanning, free WiFi and much more, ”said Breault.

After Breault explored the Statesboro area for some time, the franchisees decided that the Southern Square Center on Northside Drive, which includes Tractor Supply, Office Max, and Seasons of Japan, was the most sensible place to build a Planet Fitness is.

“Our team is always looking for locations where we have the best opportunity to serve as many members of the community as possible,” he said. “When looking for an ideal location in the community, the center on Northside Drive offered the ideal mix of co-tenants, accessibility and visibility from the streets.”

Breault said the club will offer its popular Judgment Free Zone to help customers from all walks of life feel comfortable with their own fitness goals.

“Planet Fitness will also be offering our free fitness training, where certified trainers will guide members through the gym and provide instructions on how to properly use everything we have to offer,” he said. “Our trainers also provide a variety of small-group training courses and are available to develop a customized exercise program that will help members achieve their goals and get the most out of their training.”

Planet Fitness was founded in Dover, New Hampshire in 1992 and today operates 2,086 stores in the US and around the world.
