Kuala Lumpur: Reversing pre-diabetes is definitely not impossible, says Prof. Dr. Chan Siew Pheng, President of the Malaysian Endocrine and Metabolic Society (MEMS) United Front Against Diabetes: Care In This Era And Beyond! “Dr. Chan said here today that recent research has shown that losing weight (with diet and lifestyle) can prevent pre-diabetic people from becoming diabetic. She also said that people with recently diagnosed type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) can also reverse their diabetes by losing 15 percent of their body weight.
“According to the 2019 National Health and Morbidity Survey (NHMS2019), 23.6 percent of adults in Malaysia have pre-diabetes (i.e. abnormal fasting plasma glucose). This corresponds to approximately five million (5,019,359) adults; These people are at high risk of developing diabetes in the future.
“The good news, however, is that recent research has shown that by losing 7 to 10 percent of body weight (with diet and lifestyle) we can prevent these pre-diabetic people from becoming diabetic.”
