The holy month of Sawan, also known as Shravan Maas, began on July 25th this year. During this month devotees worship Lord Shiva and often fast. On ‘Sawan ka somwar’ (Monday, which falls in the month of Shravan), devotees hold a special fast and visit Shiva temples. While devotees worship Lord Shiva on Mondays all year round, the Mondays in this month are considered very significant and auspicious. The festival is mainly observed in the north Indian states. The lucky month of Sawan began on Friday, July 23rd and ends on Sunday, August 22nd.

Gourmets look forward to this month as well because of the various dishes that are prepared during this time to comply with the fasting rituals. There are many storage-friendly recipes that can be prepared during this time. So we thought we’d share five easy and quick recipes you can make during your fast to help you stay full and healthy throughout the day.

Kuttu Ki Puri

These puris are made from grams of buckwheat flour and are very popular during Shravan month. You will need grams of buckwheat flour, boiled and mashed potatoes, a few pinches of rock salt, black pepper, and oil for frying the puris to prepare this dish. Sift the flour into a bowl. Add the boiled mashed potatoes and salt to the flour and mix. Make a soft dough and let it rest for 30 minutes. Cut small balls out of the dough and press them into a round shape. Fry the poori in hot ghee and serve hot.

Vrat Wale Aloo

Potatoes are one of the most popular ingredients this month. In addition to being easy to prepare, this dish is also very filling. To prepare this dish, you will need potatoes, tomatoes, green chilies, rock salt, black pepper, green chillies, and coriander leaves. Start by boiling a few potatoes. Heat some oil in a pan, then add the caramel seeds and chopped green chilies. Fry for a few minutes and add chopped tomatoes. Once the tomatoes are cooked, add potatoes and mash them. Mix well. Add a couple of cups of water and seasonings. Cook until the sauce thickens and garnish with coriander leaves.

Sabudana Tikki is another popular dish enjoyed by devotees this auspicious month. To create this, first immerse the Sabudana overnight. Next, boil the potatoes and mash them well. Mix the sabudana with the mashed potatoes. Add dry mango powder, rock salt, green chillies, and cumin powder. Shape small meatballs and deep fry until golden brown. Serve with mint or coriander chutney.

Phool Makhana Nibbles

Phool Makhana Munchies are an incredible shravan month snack and are really easy to make. To prepare this dish, first toast the lotus seeds or phool makhana over low heat for 8-10 minutes or until crispy. Mix the ghee, pepper powder, cumin powder, rock salt and dry mango powder and set aside. Pour the ghee mixture into the pan and fry for a minute. Cool to room temperature. Serve or store in an airtight container.

Dates and nuts Laddoo

Laddoos never go out of style when fasting. To prepare this sweet dish, roast nuts on the stove for a few minutes and set them aside to cool. In the same pan, add pitted dates and heat until soft. Then add the nuts to the date mixture and mix. Take small portions and roll them into balls. Finally roll in desiccated coconut and serve.
