STONY BROOK, NY June 2, 2021Stony Brook Brook University Hospital has received a two-year Advanced Inpatient Diabetes certification from The Joint Commission after a comprehensive review of his diabetes program.

Stony Brook will become the seventh hospital in New York State and the first Suffolk County hospital to receive advanced certification. Only 66 hospitals nationally received this award after a rigorous three-day review by Joint Commission assessors.

Certification demonstrates continued compliance with the Joint Commission’s performance standards. As the “Gold Seal of Approval®” of the Joint Commission for Advanced Inpatient Diabetes, it reflects the commitment of a health organization to safe, high-quality patient care.

“This success demonstrates the outstanding quality of care our faculty and staff provide for patients with diabetes,” said Carol Gomes, MS, SPECIALIST, CPHQ, Chief Executive Officer of Stony Brook University Hospital. “Our entire diabetes team is uniquely equipped and qualified to help our patients cope with the daily challenges of coping with their illness.”

To earn Joint Commission certification, a team of assessors evaluated Stony Brook’s compliance with applicable standards, including program management and the provision and facilitation of clinical care. The certification recognizes health organizations that offer clinical programs for the full spectrum of care for patients with diabetes. The review process evaluates how organizations use clinical outcomes and performance metrics to identify opportunities to improve care and prepare patients and their caregivers for discharge.

“The Advanced Inpatient Diabetes Certification recognizes healthcare organizations that are committed to continuous quality improvement in patient safety and quality of care,” said Mark Pelletier, RN, MS, Chief Operating Officer, Accreditation and Certification Operations and Chief Nursing Executive, The Joint Commission. “We commend Stony Brook for using the certification to reduce variation in her clinical processes and strengthen her program structure and management framework for diabetes patients.”

“Our teamwork has enabled patients with diabetes in Stony Brook to have a transformative journey,” said Gomes. “By focusing on specific opportunities for improvement, we improve the quality of care and clinical outcomes.”
