Bethany Village Senior Living Community residents want you to send them your favorite dessert.

BETHANY, Pennsylvania – Every morning a group of Bethany Village Senior Living Community residents wake up and exercise, but it’s not just about staying healthy. It’s also because they get a sweet treat afterward: a dessert.

“Everything chocolate. It can be candy, it can be cake, it can be pudding, it could be anything, but I’m a chocolate-alcoholic,” said resident Carolyn Funk.

“Rhubarb pie,” said Lee Benjamin.

“Ice cream,” laughed Jean Theobald.

“Pretty much everything. Cakes mostly. I love ice-cream cakes,” said Resident Judy Warren.

Residents love their desserts and ask people from all over to send them dessert recipes for a cookbook called Bethany Village Just Desserts.

“We don’t care if we get 30 apple pie recipes because each one might taste different,” said Kim Erickson, activity director for the Bethany Village Senior Living Community.

Enjoying and learning new sweet treats is only part of it. Bethany Village staff hope the new recipes will help bring back fond memories of baking at a young age.

“Most people remember having this flour all over the place and putting their hands in the dough and just having a great time and it brings back those old memories and they may not have all of the new memories to remember, but they remember it, “said Erickson.

“We used to have a lot of apple trees, so we had a lot of apples, so we had apple pie, especially my mother’s. She made the most delicious crust you can ever try,” said resident Dolores Zaltuskey.

The idea of a cookbook is well received by the residents.

“They’re classic,” said Funk. “You go back through the centuries and look at recipes and people you knew with those recipes.”

Last March, the residents received over 1,200 postcards for their “Postcards Across America” project.
