ARLINGTON, Va., March 25, 2021 / PRNewswire / – The American Diabetes Association® (ADA) and the Pfizer Foundation have partnered to address food insecurity and high diabetes rates in Montgomery communities. Alabama. The foundation’s grant is part of ADA’s national Health Equity Now platform, which aims to ensure that all people with diabetes and the millions of underserved Americans who are at greatest risk for diabetes have equal access to resources they don’t only need to survive but also need to flourish to survive.
The ADA will work with local community partners such as the Communities Improvement Association, Inc. and Living Well Associates, Inc. to develop a 10 acre community garden that will give over 1,000 residents better access to seasonal fruits and vegetables Montgomery County, Alabama. In addition, the ADA and local community partners will provide diabetes support programs and resources to provide health education to those at and / or at risk for type 2 diabetes.

The inability to afford or access healthy foods has serious consequences for people with diabetes and prediabetes. With limited incomes, individuals can be forced to make difficult decisions when purchasing groceries or necessary medicines. In fact, the risk of type 2 diabetes is doubled and has been linked to poor medication and recommended self-care compliance, diabetes problems, and poor blood sugar control compared to those who are food-safe.
Montgomery, AL is a predominantly low-income black African American community in which nearly 21% of people have an income below the poverty line. In addition, many residents have limited access to healthy food, especially in rural areas. Feeding America estimates that around 21% of residents in Montgomery County foods are unsafe. Furthermore, the unequal distribution of supermarkets is in Alabama A disproportionate number of low-income families lack access to nutritious food. Not surprising, Alabama is plagued by a high rate of diabetes (13.2%) and a high rate of obesity (40.8%) associated with diabetes.
Funding for this program comes from the Pfizer Foundation.
