LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Mental health resources can be difficult to find when you don’t know where to look. That’s why Texas Tech started a one-stop grooming shop called Beyond OK.
It’s a website and social media campaign that encourages students to find wellness practices or advice.
Beyond OK communications specialist Ashley Marino said social media is a great tool for motivating students. Instead of calling or emailing, students can share their questions or concerns directly.
“These posts, especially with really detailed information and resources at the end, get so widely circulated, and even if they are not published, like a public story or something, they are sent straight to others. And I think that’s really cool because it’s like someone needs to know more about this topic, ”said Marino.
If you’re not a tech student, you can learn about mental health awareness through Star Care’s mental health first aid training, an online self-paced course with a virtual debrief.
Coordinator Kris Galvan said it empowers people to identify the signs of mental illness and have difficult conversations.
“We never want to have or reach the point where the individual is in an active crisis. And from that point on, it’s excessive or not a little, it’s escalated a lot, almost we just can’t really help them anymore in the crisis. So the whole point of mental health first aid is to de-escalate a crisis first, ”Galvan said.
