The most wonderful thing about essential oils is that even if you think you know all of their magic, soon you will discover something else they can do. In addition to coping with pain and stress, cleaning the skin and sinuses as well as preventive health, essential oils are known to curb both thinning hair and balding and stimulate new hair growth. Even as a semi-annual essential oil user, I didn’t know this until recently, but it all makes sense. From repairing damaged hair follicles and shafts to poor circulation and fungal infections on the scalp to improving thickness, firmness or shine, there seems to be an oil for every type of hair problem.
“Essential oils are an amazing alternative to so many synthetic products that we have considered ‘normal’ in our lives and at home. These powerful oils allow us to take our health and vitality into our own hands,” says Julie Botton , an Institute of Integrative Nutrition Certified Health Coach and DoTerra Wellness Advocate who firmly believes that our health is so much more than the food we put in our mouths. She works with clients of all ages and needs and looks at the bigger picture to slowly and consistently make realistic improvements. Essential oils are the first step.
THE POWER OF ESSENTIAL OILS
Essential oils have been used in alternative, eastern, and homeopathic medicines for generations. They are made up of volatile compounds in the roots, petals, seeds, bark and leaves of plants that actually protect the plants from environmental threats and changing seasons. When harvested and distilled properly, pure concentrated plant extracts contain 50% to 70% more potency than the herbs themselves. The types and uses of essential oils are endless, and with a few guidance you can use them effectively to meet your needs.
“For those who are just starting their oil journey, I always recommend starting with aromatic and topical use and a diffuser for mood management, sleep, energy, and anything breathing-related,” says Botton. “Topically, it can be used for so many different uses. On a typical day, I use yarrow and frankincense on my skin for anti-aging benefits, rosemary on my scalp for hair growth, peppermint on my stomach for digestion, rose as a natural.” Deodorant, lavender and melaleuca in my mascara and lemon in my water for detox. “The general rule of thumb is to always do a stain test before use to avoid irritation and to dilute in a carrier oil like fractionated coconut oil, pure jojoba or almond, so as not to irritate the skin or scalp.

HOW ESSENTIAL OILS CAN HELP WITH HAIR LOSS
Botton not only starts with the right products, but also shares these “recipes” with its customers in order to increase their effectiveness. A good place to start is by adding 30 drops of oil to the conditioner bottle and shaking it. For a night mask, place five drops of the oil of your choice below on a castor oil base, sleep with your hair wrapped around you, and shampoo when you wake up. Even adding a little lavender essential oil to an eyelash or brow serum will promote hair growth.
