There are 2 to 3 million people in the United States with type 1 diabetes, about half of whom are reported to be treated by internists Guillermo E. Umpierrez, MD, MACP, President-elect of the American Diabetes Association.
In this video Umpierrez who is also a The Professor of Medicine at Emory University School of Medicine will discuss highlights of his presentation at the ACP Internal Medicine Virtual Meeting on key updates in diabetes management.
There are roughly 15 types of insulin for patients with type 1 diabetes, and newer formulations have been shown to improve blood sugar control and reduce hypoglycemic events, Umpierrez said during his presentation. In making treatment decisions, he encouraged doctors to rely on continuous glucose monitoring values.
Umpierrez also discussed recommendations for the treatment of patients with type 2 diabetes and the role of GLP-1 receptor agonists and SGLT2 inhibitors in improving blood sugar control and reducing serious adverse cardiovascular events. It has also been shown to reduce the progression of end-stage kidney disease, Umpierrez said.
