Global health experts propose action plans at a conference in Tokyo to improve food security for hundreds of millions of people.

The conference is called “Tokyo Nutrition for Growth Summit”. Dozens of officials and philanthropists attend the two-day event. Japan’s prime minister spoke and pledged $ 2.8 billion to help other countries and regions over the next three years.

Most executives participate virtually. According to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, hunger is increasing due to conflict, climate disorders and poverty. He said, “The COVID-19 pandemic is making these numbers worse. Hunger rose by 20 percent last year, and more than 41 million people were on the verge of starvation. “

A place severely affected by hunger and climate change is the island state of Madagascar in Africa. Drought causes rivers to dry up and affects food availability. At the conference, the country’s president urged the world to take action.

Madagascar President Andry Nirina Rajoelina said: “Almost 75,000 children under the age of five are suffering from acute malnutrition. Given these alarming numbers, we must find adequate solutions. It is imperative because millions of lives are at risk.”

Afghanistan was not officially represented at the conference, but it is also facing a serious food crisis. At least one million children are at risk of dying of malnutrition without immediate help, according to the UN.
