Also reveals new vendor-focused resources on secondary hyperparathyroidism

Rockville, MD. –News Direct – American Kidney Fund

The American Kidney Fund (AKF) today launched Kidney Kitchen Pro ™, a comprehensive online resource that provides assistance to kidney dieticians, other related health professionals and clinicians to help patients successfully meet the challenges of kidney-friendly diet and nutrition.

Kidney Kitchen Pro offers customizable resources like nutrition plans and toolkits to help people with kidney disease better manage their health through what they eat and drink. The Kidney Kitchen Pro meal planning tool makes it easy to put together and share a week-long meal plan of recipes from AKF’s popular Kidney Kitchen® website along with other kidney-friendly foods.

In addition, AKF today announced new educational resources on secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT), which occurs when a pre-existing condition such as chronic kidney disease (CKD) causes low blood calcium levels. The new SHPT downloadable guide will help professionals have supportive discussions with patients about what SHPT does to the body and how diet and medication can prevent the disease.

Both Kidney Kitchen Pro and SHPT resources were developed by AKF with generous financial support from Amgen Inc.

Damage to the kidney filters caused by kidney disease prevents the kidneys from adequately removing waste, excess minerals, and extra fluids from the blood. A kidney-friendly diet is critical to helping patients manage their disease, although there is no standard kidney diet recommendation to follow as everyone’s nutritional needs are different and based on individual laboratory results. For example, if a CKD patient is also treating SHPT, he and his care team need to monitor calcium, vitamin D, and phosphorus levels that are out of balance.

“Eating a kidney-friendly diet is an ongoing challenge for people with kidney disease and kidney failure,” said LaVarne A. Burton, President and CEO of AKF. “Our goal in developing Kidney Kitchen Pro and SHPT resources was to provide much-needed, comprehensive, standardized, and easy-to-use content for kidney dieters and other professionals to use with their patients. We are grateful to Amgen for supporting our efforts to develop nutritional resources that help patients and providers work together to develop and customize meal plans based on their eating habits, preferences, and personal dietary restrictions. “

The story goes on

AKF built Kidney Kitchen Pro under the strategic guidance of the American Kidney Fund Dietitian Advisory Group, a diverse collaboration of 10 experienced kidney dieters who led the development and execution of the content, tools and resources:

  • Melanie Betz, MS, RD, CSR, CSG

  • Antonio D. Cain, MBA, RDN, LDN

  • Maura Chesney, RD, LDN

  • Carolyn Feibig, MS, RD, LD, CCTD

  • Janelle Gonyea, RDN, LD, FNKF

  • Beth Guthrie, MS, RDN, LD

  • Amanda Oakley-Lane, MS, RD, LDN

  • María Eugenia Rodríguez-León, MS, RD, CSR, LND

  • Gang Whelan, MS, RDN, CDN

  • Kathy Wong, BS, RD, RDN

“Kidney disease and related conditions such as secondary hyperparathyroidism can have significant clinical consequences, so proper food and nutrient intake is critical for patients,” said Ned Endler, Executive Director at Amgen Inc. “Amgen is honored to do the American Kidney Fund in this initiative to improve the health outcomes of kidney patients and ultimately improve their lives. “
