CHICAGO, 4th August 2021 / PRNewswire / – As teenage athletes begin to return to fall sports and get excited when the late 2020 Olympics are underway Tokyo, some of them could go to the limit to get back into competitive mode. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics encourages parents and caregivers to teach teenagers how to safely return to exercise and properly energize their bodies to continue to grow and mature.
The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics guides teenagers on how to safely resume autumn sports and properly energize their bodies.
In August, the Academy and its foundation celebrate the importance of healthy eating and active lifestyles for children and their families with the annual Kids Eat Right Month ™.
“Proper nutrition helps develop healthy bones, increased endurance and muscle strength,” says a certified nutritionist Julie Stefanski, on Baltimore-Speaker of the Academy. “The diet and exercise recommendations for young athletes differ depending on the physical demands of the sport and the age and gender of the athlete.”
A qualified nutritionist, especially a specialist in sports nutrition, can give athletes individual nutritional advice, says Stefanski, a certified specialist in sports dietetics. RDNs are the food and nutrition experts.
Stefanski recommends parents and caregivers brush up on diet and physical activity basics to help their teen return to their chosen sport:
Food is fuel
Daily meals should contain high-quality calories from fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat or fat-free dairy products, lean protein foods, and heart-healthy fats, says Stefanski. Eating a variety of healthy foods and nutritious snacks every day helps athletes’ bodies regenerate, recover, and recharge.
Young athletes should consume foods rich in carbohydrates for energy and foods rich in protein for building muscle. You should stay hydrated throughout the day and drink more fluids before, during, and after your workout.
“It takes time to get used to the heat, so it’s important that coaches prioritize water breaks and emphasize the importance of fluid intake,” says Stefanski.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many young people have not done as much sport in the past year. While not all sports will resume this fall, older children and teenagers should follow the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans (2nd
“Teens should listen to their bodies when they resume their exercise routines. Encourage them to take it slow in order to build up their stamina and strength again and avoid injuries, ”says Stefanski.
“With the right guidance, teens can do strength or resistance training with free weights, rubber bands or tubes, weight machines, or their own body weight. Strength training not only improves body composition and cardiac fitness, it also improves bone density.”
