Figuring out what to eat if you have diabetes can be difficult, but WVU counseling services in Mineral and Hampshire Counties can help.

A series of Eating With Diabetes courses will be offered starting on Wednesday March 17th and continuing on March 24th, March 31st and April 7th. The course takes place from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

These educational workshops will be virtual through Zoom and will be open to people with diabetes, their family members and caregivers. The courses are free, but you have to register in advance. Participants are asked to attend all 4 lessons.

The courses include recipe demonstrations where participants learn how to prepare healthy, easy-to-prepare, and great-tasting meals. Attendees will also receive up-to-date information on diet, meal planning, exercise, and understanding of common medical tests associated with diabetes from a certified diabetes advisor.

Diabetes is a very serious and costly disease, but research has shown that those who learn to manage their blood sugar levels, eat healthily, and exercise regularly can lower the risk of complications and lead healthier, more productive lives.

The courses, run by WVU Hampshire and Mineral County Extension Services, WVU Medicine, and WVUES Family Nutrition Program, are available for registration now. Registration can be done by calling the Hampshire Extension Service at 304-822-5013 or emailing kelly.hicks@mail.wvu.edu.
