Diabetes is a common condition caused by high blood sugar levels. If you have diabetes, you can benefit from some dietary changes to avoid unwanted complications.

Around five million people in the UK have been diagnosed with diabetes.

However, there are likely to be far more cases as large numbers of people can be at risk without knowing it.

Type 2 diabetes is the most common type of diabetes, accounting for around 90 percent of all cases.

It is caused when the body does not make enough of the hormone insulin or the body does not respond to insulin.

“Your preference would be to look for balanced foods,” said Dr. Sara to Express Health. “So vegetables, carbohydrates, protein and healthy fats on one plate.

“You also want to think about how these foods are prepared. High saturated fats are less healthy for you. If you can look at grilled foods, this is often a better choice.

“If you wanted to eat your protein as meat – if you could try to have meat that is less heavy in the saturated areas, that is, less red meat and more poultry or fish.

“I think it’s a good start and I prefer a Lebanese take-away because there is grilled meat, a little rice and often a lot of salads and vegetables. For me this is the ultimate healthy take-away meal. “
