Updated: April 9, 2021 / 7:35 a.m. EDT(WYTV) – Are you striving for a healthy lifestyle? You may have reached for an artificial sweetener, but it can be controversial. Can They Cause Diabetes?
This is what the Ohio State researchers wanted to know in this experiment.
They gave healthy adults the maximum recommended amount of the common artificial sweetener saccharin for two weeks.
They thought they were going to find that the artificial sweetener was starting to do bad things to the bodies.
“But we didn’t. We did not see any changes in the gut microbiota, and apparently we did not see any changes in the change in the metabolic profile of healthy individuals, ”said George Kyriazis, Ph.D. at Ohio State Wexner Medical Center.
The results can reassure us that saccharin doesn’t cause diabetes.
We know that sugar can contribute to diabetes, heart disease and obesity, but all in moderation.
And the experiments are not over yet. There will be more research on every type of artificial sweetener that has been approved by the FDA, as well as some long-term studies on it.
