WESTON, Florida. – Researchers discover that the early onset of type II diabetes can increase the risk of various forms of dementia later in life.

Dr. Damon Salzman, a neurologist with Cleveland Clinic Weston, said that over time, elevated blood sugar seems to affect the brain’s ability to function well.

“In addition, untreated diabetes, particularly type II diabetes, can also increase the risk of arteriosclerosis or thickening of the blood vessels, and this can also reduce blood flow to the brain,” he said

Salzman said the study found that early-onset diabetes increased the risk of dementia by 25%.

When it comes to supporting brain health, researchers have found that music can be beneficial.

The focus of a new study found that active music making can have a positive effect on people with mild cognitive impairments.

The researchers said future studies could investigate whether a particular music-related activity, such as singing or playing an instrument, could have a greater impact on brain function.
