NEW YORK, March 21, 2021 / PRNewswire-PRWeb / – Fruit Street announced today that since its inception, more than 20,000 participants have participated in its CDC-recognized diabetes prevention program, delivered through telemedicine and live group video conferencing with registered dietitians via Zoom. Fruit Street plans to add an additional 25,000 to 50,000 participants to its diabetes prevention program in 2021. This makes Fruit Street one of the world’s largest digital providers of diabetes prevention programs.

Fruit Street’s Diabetes Prevention Program is a 12 month program designed to help people with prediabetes reduce their risk of type 2 diabetes by losing 5-7% of their weight through diet and lifestyle changes. The program consists of 26 one-hour courses between a nutritionist and a group of 30 other participants, offered through Zoom. Curriculum topics such as diet, exercise, sleep, and stress management are discussed in each class. Participants will also receive a wireless scale, Fitbit, and will be able to take photos of their food on the Fruit Street mobile application.

Fruit Street’s diabetes prevention program is based on previous clinical research funded by Medicare and published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2002. These showed that participants in diabetes prevention programs can reduce their risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 58%, and in those over the year age 60, by 71%. Fruit Street has validated its clinical results by obtaining “Full Recognition” status with the CDC. This means that it will consistently produce results like an average weight loss of 5% for those who attend for 9 months.

Fruit Street’s delivery of the Diabetes Prevention Program is unique in that it is delivered via telemedicine and live group video conferencing on Zoom, which is most akin to a face-to-face classroom experience. “We strongly believe that using live group video conferencing is effective in combating chronic disease as it combats loneliness and isolation and creates a sense of community and accountability among participants that helps drive positive lifestyle and behavioral changes … “

“… We are proud to have more than 20,000 Americans enrolled in our diabetes prevention program to help them improve their health and reduce their risk of developing chronic diseases.
