The product comes from extract of a dahlia plant, which has unusually strong anti-diabetic properties.

The University of Otago found several highly potent chemicals in dahlia plants and are now making them a natural product to address one of our biggest health problems.

“Almost 450 million people around the world have diabetes and this may be one of the first treatments in the world to treat the root cause of the disease, encephalitis,” said Alex Tups of the University of Otago.

Approximately 1 million kiwi fruit have prediabetes, some without knowing it. Seventy percent of them will develop diabetes if left untreated.

It is hoped that the extract from the dahlia plant will prevent this progression and limit the long-term effects for those who already have it.

“You would lower your blood sugar levels and thereby avoid any long-term complications. Blindness, amputations, unfortunately, and heart disease, ”says Tups.

The university is working with Aroma New Zealand to bring the product to market.

“We have the ability to help thousands and millions of people around the world. So it’s very exciting to be part of this process, ”said Ben Winters, Director of Aroma New Zealand.

This season, more than 300,000 dahlia flowers are processed into ready-to-eat capsules.

There has already been a successful clinical trial to test the safety of the capsule. Now there is a second to determine the dose and the participants are badly needed.

“If you want to be a part of this amazing story, it would be nice to sign up,” says Tups.
