WELLESLEY, Mass. and MERRIFIELD, Va., May 6, 2021 / PRNewswire / – Sun Life is a national sponsor of Project Power, an adolescent health and fitness program run by the American Diabetes Association® (ADA). The program enables teenagers to choose healthy lifestyles in order to develop lifelong, sustainable and healthy habits. Project Power is a free program made up of fun lessons and physically Activity challenges to encourage children and their families to get and stay healthy together. The program was switched to a virtual format last year.

“Healthy habits are especially strong when they are learned young and we look forward to our Project Power youth and their parents becoming healthier families, hopefully for generations to come,” he said Kelly Mueller, Vice President, ADA Program Administration Office. “85 percent of the 88 million Americans with prediabetes don’t know they have it. It is imperative that we teach our children and our communities how to lead healthy lifestyles.”

With the aim of slowing the development of obesity in children and preventing type 2 diabetes, Project Power focuses on health promotion, nutritional education, increased physical activity and family involvement. The program fits well with Sun Life’s other diabetes and youth-focused initiatives, including Fit to Win and # SunLifeDunk4Diabetes with Boston Celtics and YMCA by Greater Boston area;; Home Run to Health and #StrikeoutDiabetes with the Kansas City Royals and YMCA from Kansas City;; and Sun Life’s own Team Up Against Diabetes Grant program.

Project Power “Graduates” have shown significant improvements in health and nutritional knowledge. In surveys before and after the program, three out of four participants showed confidence in the ability to choose healthy snacks and exercise regularly. In addition to activities for children, Project Power runs regular parenting meetings where participating parents can speak with others in the community and hear from experts, including Sun Life US Medical Director Dr. Tracy Hamill.

“As a doctor and the parent of someone with diabetes, I understand the challenges we face when helping our loved ones, especially our children, lead healthy lives,” said Dr. Hamill. “Better access to programs like Project Power is important to helping children and families improve their health and general well-being. We look forward to working with ADA to bring this program to more families and communities. “

Project Power is intended for children ages 5 to 12. Each participant will receive a Project Power Box to take home, which contains an official Project Power t-shirt, activity journal, water bottle, jump rope, hacky sack and much more. In addition to virtual group meetings, there are games and friendship competitions, weekly social media challenges and other family activities on the program. New sessions will start in fall 2021 and registration is now open. Visit diabetes.org/projectpower for more information.
